No DGT appointments available? What you can do
You open the DGT appointment site (cita previa), choose your office, and the calendar is empty, or the site says the office has no capacity. It happens often, and it is not always a dead end. This guide sticks to what the DGT says on its own pages.
Check that you chose the right office and area
Each office handles procedures only in the processing areas listed for it. According to the DGT, if the area you need has no free dates you cannot book in a different area instead, so make sure the area matches your procedure (for example drivers, vehicles or licence exchange) before giving up.
Try other offices
The booking form lets you pick the office. If another office has free dates and you can travel there, it can be worth the trip. Opening hours change between winter and summer, so check them before you go, and bring your ID document.
Use every way to book
- Online, in the DGT appointment service, where you can request, check and cancel appointments.
- The miDGT app, for Android and iOS.
- Phone 060 (from abroad +34 902 887 060). The automatic service answers 24 hours a day; an agent is available Monday to Friday, 9:00–18:00, except national holidays.
These are the DGT's own booking channels. Be careful with websites that sell appointments: they are intermediaries, not the DGT.
Find out whether you need an appointment at all
According to the DGT you do not need one for, among other things:
- written submissions, allegations and appeals;
- complaints and suggestions;
- refund requests for fees you paid;
- people aged 65 or over, for procedures where they are the interested party, during the office's preferential hours;
- people with mobility problems who must go to the office after a driver assessment centre;
- finishing an international permit that you started on the DGT electronic office;
- finishing a licence exchange that you started on the electronic office, once the office tells you to complete it in person.
Many other procedures can be done online without visiting an office. The service catalogue lists them.
Catch the dates that free up
The DGT asks anyone who cannot attend to cancel, so that someone else can use the slot, and you can cancel or change an appointment at any time. This means dates can appear at any hour. Checking the calendar by hand several times a day works, but it takes a lot of time.
Keep in mind that you can hold only one appointment at a time: cancel the old one before you book another.
A gestoría can help
A gestoría (gestor administrativo) can handle many DGT procedures for you, for a fee. Ask whether yours is one of them.
